My wardrobe was full of dark velvet flares too. I remember one outfit, dark blue satin trousers, and a silver satin jacket. I would go down to a shop called Ace on the Kings Road, where they would sell all this incredible stuff. things that you could wear for parties but would never wear walking down the street. Fashionable clothes were things like Oxford Bag trousers and Budgie coats. “Like a lot of people, dressing in Glam clothes meant party clothes. I thought they were the bee’s knees but I couldn’t walk in them nowadays. They came up to mid-thigh and had diamante all down the sides and really high spiked heels. I had one pair that I particularly liked. I think I was shielded from that, but some of them were pretty bad. “I don’t think I was allowed to see the worst of them either. I’d get a lot of quite pervy letters flooding in. They don’t seem a bit stylish now but I really loved them at the time. I’d wear tight denim jeans, a little waistcoat and, of course, the thigh-length black leather boots. “For my part, the Glam thing was casual anyway. Also, it was a good way for the public to see a little beyond the image because there was no way they could seem distant and charismatic – Image-wise, they were naked.” So Tiswas was a good antidote to all that. I know that all the Glam bands were very competitive in the way they dressed. “But I think most of them came on because it was refreshing for them. Glammed up pop stars don’t look so charismatic when they are dripping in water or covered in slime. “We’d get The Sweet on, for instance, and they would have reverted to denim, probably because they didn’t want us to ruin their clothes. But the funny thing was that, because most of them knew full well that they would get soaked in water, they often tended to dress down a bit. it’s always had this Glam image, mainly because all the Glam artists came onto the show. One of the most universally desired sex symbols of Glam was Sally James, star of probably the greatest Glam kids television show ever, Tiswas. It had the effect of making its superstars somehow seem more human, more approachable. The funds raised by the foundation are dispersed through the Food Bank of Delaware to support school backpack programs and school pantries statewide.One of the best things about Glam fashion was that it was always available, and never overpriced. The Harry K Foundation, established by Harry Keswani, has vowed to raise money and donate 100 percent of its proceeds to help alleviate the problem of food insecurity in Delaware.
Glitz and Glam 2021 is made possible in part by local sponsors including Tish Brey, Freeman Foundation, Pathways to Success, Village Salon and Spa, and Pat Campbell-White. Additionally, there will be a 50/50 and a raffle for a $1,000 gift card to Atlantic Jewelers. This year's event will feature a ticket auction with works of art by local artists. Tickets are $44 per person, which includes an appetizer, lunch and dessert. The Harry K Foundation will receive 10 percent of the proceeds. Ladies can shop missy and plus-size clothing, hats, handbags, shoes, scarves and accessories. CraZy LadyZ! co-owners Jan Patterson-Hohman and Louise Reardon will bring their boutique back to the Hyatt Place Dewey Beach for the Glitz and Glam fashion show and luncheon from 11 a.m.
